What Questions Will You Ask?

What questions will you ask during science fair season this year?  Did you decide on your project yet?  There are so many wonderful things to learn!

Are you interested in learning more about water?

Why are there more rocks in some places than dirt?

Why do we have more dark hours during the winter?

Have you thought about how plants grow?

Why do some objects fall faster than others?

Who actually makes fruitcake?!

Well, I'm not sure that last question is a good one for the science fair ... BUT there are SO many interesting things out there to research and experiment.

Ask your parents to help you look up a fun idea that you can study and learn more about.  Then prepare to share it with everyone else at the science fair!

We're all getting excited to see what amazing ideas everyone discovers in the wonderful mad world of science.  Have fun everybody!!!

And We're Off!!!!!

The Science Fair season has officially begun!  On Thursday, December 19th before the holiday break began, Mrs. Jacobs from YCIS came to visit our school.  She teaches science at the middle school.

Mrs. Jacobs shared with all of us in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades about what fun science is and how preparing a science project can help us learn a lot more about it!

Do you remember the very first word in science???

Safety

Always remember to be safe - wear safety goggles, use oven mits, an apron, even a hard hat if necessary.  Make sure to protect yourself while you're experimenting.  Remember that what goes up must come down!

Do you remember the magic number in science???

Three

Remember to test your hypothesis at least three different times while performing your experiment.  After you come up with your own hypothesis or educated guess, you will need to perform tests that either support or disprove your hypothesis.  (You can certainly perform more than three tests, but you should test at least three times.)

Good luck everyone!!  And remember to have fun with your experiments!!!

The Science Fair is Coming!

Welcome to the blog for the Yamhill Carlton Elementary School Science Fair.
We're so excited that you found us!!

It's almost here ... it's almost time ... get ready for the YCSD:

A Science Fair is a great opportunity for kids to practice investigation and invention with science.  There is so much to learn!!

Why Should Your Child Enter the Science Fair?

Because it’s FUN!  Children are natural scientists.  They love experimenting and discovering new things. It's exciting for your child to be in control of their own experiment. They get to play the MAD SCIENTIST ... and get some real results!

Please refer to this blog for ideas and updated information.  You can find links on the internet for ideas about selecting a science project (check out our "Get Ideas Here" section on the right column), find out some guidelines for our science fair (look at the page labeled "Rules and Regulations" at the top), learn about how the science fair works (select the "How It Works" page), and even get information on preparing your display board (click on the "Display Board" page).  We even have a page called "Science Fair Ideas" for a list of topics to choose from!

You can sign up to receive an e-mail every time this blog is updated!  (see the far right column and enter your e-mail address to "Follow us with Email")

Keep an eye out for registration forms which will be sent home in your child's Take Home Folder after school resumes in January.

Registration forms need to be submitted no later than
Friday, January 17th, 2014.

Please note that experiments do need to be conducted outside of class time.

We're looking forward to seeing what your little scientist can discover!
